Specs are specs and even the cheaper ones are powerhouses compared to even a year or so ago. Unless you are a serious gamer most all will be fine.

The big part that people miss is how it fits you. so you have to sit and type on it and see if it feels comfortable.... as you will spend much time on it.

Don't worry about a huge screen or anything. Pay attention of course but remember this will be your "new little freind".You will want to take it home, travel with it and such.

Sometimetime is better to get on e that is on sale and then have them add more memory.
References :
You will want at least 4 GB of ram memory, large as possible hard drive ( 320 to 500 GB or two hard drives), wireless card, blue tooth,
The new Windows 7 operating system, full sized key board, CD/DVD drive double layer, Add Microsoft Office Suite ( it's better than MS Works ). Consider the size of monitor/screen you want. Go to http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/home.to or http://www.dell.com and compare specifications and prices ( buy direct and save ). You might also want to purchase the factory extended warranty as lap tops are expensive to repair.
Hope this helps
References :
I have two Toshiba Satellite lap tops. A 15.4 and 17 inch screen.

What do I need to know when purchasing a laptop?
I know nothing about purchasing computers or laptops. Will someone please tell me everything I need to know before I make a purchase. Also, someone just told me about GB. How many GB should I get for my laptop? I am a college student in case that would help you answer my question. Thank you in advance!!
